Project activities

The project will build the capacity key CSOs in six countries (Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia) to carry out awareness-raising and consultative activities on the potential impact of an EPAs with a wide range of CSOs and to provide them with the skills and channels of communication through which they can advocate their concerns to policy-makers.

The project partners will carry out the following activities in each of their respective countries:

  • The project will open with the production of a background paper,The Technical Workshop in Ethiopia took place on 16 March which will synthesise the findings of existing impact studies for each of the project countries.
  • This background paper will then be presented at a technical workshop to which a wide range of technical experts will be invited. Discussions will aim to draw out additional insights into the potential impact of an EPA for civil society and develop strategies for increasing awareness amongst civil Mary Mwingira presents the conclusions from the group discussion on NAMA at the Tanzanian Technical Workshop on 4 Marchsociety groups.
  • The project partners will utilise the background paper and the outputs of the technical workshop to produce reader friendly information and campaigning packs. These will distributed to the CSOs attending the consultative workshops that will follow.
  • The project partners will organise three consultative workshops in their respective countries to which a broad range of CSOs will be invited. These will be used to increase awareness of the potential impact of an EPA amongst civil society, to consult them on their concerns and build their advocacy skills in order to support their engagement with policy-makers.
  • Following the consultative workshops, the project partners will produce a national civil society advocacy paper on EPAs which clearly states the policy concerns that are expressed through the civil society workshops.
  • The advocacy paper and other project outputs will be used by the project partners and the CSOs engaged with the project for formal and informal advocacy activities.
  • An EU-campaigner will also utilise the project outputs for advocacy activities in the EU to highlight the development concerns surrounding EPAs to policy-makers.
The project will end with a regional conference to which the project partners and relevant representatives from CSOs/academia/private sector/government will be invited to share lessons learned, explore future areas of civil society engagement on trade issues and to plan for action.
